The Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) has awarded the 2017 Outstanding Public Works Employee award to Fred Felix, Engineering Administrator for the City of Tucson Department of Transportation.

Mr. Felix has worked for the City of Tucson for 21 years, and as Engineering Administrator since 2012. He has provided the knowledge and leadership critical to many award-winning projects such as Kino Parkway/22nd Street Grade-Separated Intersection and Houghton Road Improvements. Under Mr. Felix’s guidance, the Proposition 409 Road Recovery Bond Program has repaired more roadway miles than were promised to voters in 2012. The Engineering Division, under Mr. Felix, is presently undertaking major projects downtown and on Broadway, 22nd Street and Grant Road.

The 2017 Public Works Project of the Year, Transportation, $5 – $25 million award was presented to the Tucson Department of Transportation, The Ashton Company, Inc., Primary Contractor, and Psomas, Primary Consultant, for the Sabino Canyon Road – Tanque Verde Road to Kolb Road project. Construction began in December 2015 and took approximately 14 months to complete. The project extends Sabino Canyon Road south of Tanque Verde Road to Kolb Road just north of Speedway Boulevard. The new four-lane roadway features bike lanes, sidewalks, and the new Airmen Memorial Bridge over the Pantano Wash.

A new signalized intersection was constructed at the west entrance to Udall Park at Sabino Canyon Road, and on Kolb Road just north of Speedway Boulevard. The project also includes drainage improvements, native landscaping, public art and multi-use paths.
