Last week, Rep. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, suggested the Democrats might consider extending funding to candidates who aren’t on board the Abortion Express. “There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates… you need to make sure you have candidates that fit the district, that can win in these districts across America.”
Backing candidates who don’t make the constituency break out in hives might seem like a pretty commonsense method of campaigning, but common sense appears to be as welcome to the Democrats’ rank and file as a woman with a dissenting opinion in a Muslim dictatorship — or a Democratic Party confab.
Lujan might as well have said “we’re going to require IQ tests for voters.” Former party fuhrer Howard Dean declared he would withhold support for the DCCC if they backed pro-life candidates. Anti-life hate groups like NARAL proclaimed “The idea that jettisoning this issue wins elections for Democrats is folly contradicted by all available data.” Anti-life activist Lindy West, the progenitor of the “Shout Your Abortion” social media campaign, held forth in the pages of The New York Times “Of Course Abortion Should be the Litmus Test for Democrats;” and followed up with an anti-life screed, including borderline insane phrases like “To legislatively oppose abortion is to be indifferent to the suffering and possibly even the death of women.” Right, because women’s only path to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness involves vacuuming children out of their uteruses.
Planned Parenthood, the baby parts sales organization that gave us such winners as Kermit Gosnell, shrieked “abortion … is central to expanding economic opportunity to all Americans (and is) fundamental to women’s economic security, health and well-being;” with their million dollar monster, Cecile Richards, using her taxpayer-subsidized pulpit to draw the line in the slaughterhouse, calling abortion “non-negotiable.”
Then, the noted thinker Rosie O’Donnell stepped forward to announce that the Democrats’ plan to allow people who are uncomfortable with subsidizing the baby parts racket meant she was through with their two-step. In response to Lujan’s comments, O’Donnell tweeted “WOMEN SHOULD FORM OUR OWN PARTY IF DEMS DO THIS” and then “fight the men who want to take away womens rights IN OUR OWN PARTY? f–k them for even considering it – seriously – #IStandWithPP.”
Normally, I might question the wisdom of letting a group in which Rosie O’Donnell is the “smart one” dictate the central philosophy of anything outside dessert orders at the International House of Gluttony. But given that “normally” and the Democratic Party don’t collide in the same sentence all that often, I suppose letting her set the standards for their membership isn’t too far off the reservation. After all, their current branding involves ripping off a pizza delivery chain, so letting a reputed comedienne who reminds me of Jabba the Hutt’s unhinged sister take charge probably doesn’t seem too weird. And let’s be honest: I’m in no rush to stop them from waddling down this path.
It’s no secret that the Democratic Party has been struggling of late with branding. “I’m With Her” worked out about as well as “Cruella DeVille 2016.” Their flirtation with fascism, in the form of the riots, looting and assaults on political opponents, has forced them to spend an inordinate amount of time alternatively explaining why the so-called “antifa” both does and doesn’t speak for them.
President Donald Trump’s trials and tribulations, self-inflicted or otherwise, have not translated into a groundswell of support for the party which is still closely identified with the unlikable shrew who came in second to Trump last fall. I’m not sure what would sell them to voters who are increasingly disenchanted with Trump and the GOP because they’re not conservative enough; but I’m fairly certain “what we need is more dead babies” isn’t going to resonate any better than “Better Ingredients, Better Pizza, Better — er — Democrats.”
The anti-lifers appear ready to make abortion the hill on which the Democratic Party will die. That’s no hill; that’s a pile of dead babies.
