Top apps for independent travelers

From Travel Pulse

Travel apps have become an invaluable tool for globetrotters.

There are apps that can book discount hotel rooms at the last minute, snag you a table at the world’s top restaurants and even help you connect with locals offering guide services and insights about their hometowns.

To help sort through the countless apps available these days, The Guardian has just issued its own list of the top choices for “independent traveler,” providing insider tips for hundreds of destinations.

But you don’t need to be an independent traveler to appreciate the insight: Most people want to experience destinations in authentic and interesting ways:

Described as a slightly smarter alternative to simply showing up at the airport and buying the first flight you see (and can afford), this app merely asks that you provide a budget and it will do the planning. LuckyTrip identifies a destination for you to visit, as well as accommodations and activities.

This app was designed to identify the best local things to see and do in dozens of cities around the globe.

The information comes from the people who know the destinations best: locals. Or as the app’s creators like to say “a community of local tastemakers,” ranging from artists to entrepreneurs. Localeur also identifies up-and-coming destinations, great places to spend a weekend with friends and provides recommendations regarding hotels and suggested itineraries.

Wander and Co

A photo journal app, Wander and Co is aimed at true, outdoorsy adventure travelers. It allows users to share their stories, including tracking outdoor adventures with GPS and adding statistics like average pace and elevation.

Yet another app designed to showcase the opinions and insights of locals, Musement offers up what it calls the “best picks made by local experts” allowing you to live like one anywhere you go. Musement also conveniently allows for booking tickets to museums, attractions, sporting events and more. The tickets are instantly delivered to the app.

If you’re seeking still more guidance from locals about a particular destination, check out CoolCousin. This intriguing app connects you with trusted locals who will serve as your guide in cities ranging from New York to Copenhagen and London.

There are dozens of cities included, in addition to connecting users with a city resident guide. It also allows for messaging a local for some quick, personalized advice.
