Tucson-area students put talents to work on stage, behind the scenes at Arizona Theatre Company Summer on Stage

Arizona Theatre Company (ATC) is pleased to announce that 40 students from 17 Tucson-area high schools are teaming up for productions of Macbeth (July 27) and The Addams Family (July 28) at the Temple of Music & Art, 333 S. Scott Ave. as part of ATC’s Summer on Stage program.

The annual three-week program is now underway and offers high school students the opportunity to get first-hand advanced experience both on stage and behind-the-scenes with theatre professionals in voice, movement, acting, classical styles, dance and backstage skills, according to a news release from ATC.  On-stage students are mentored by ATC staff and professional teaching artists at the University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts while those working backstage are being mentored at the Temple of Music and Art and at the ATC scene shop.

General admission tickets to this year’s productions are $10 each or a family pack of 5 for $25.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.arizonatheatre.org or at the door.

Productions are:

  • Macbeth: By William Shakespeare. Directed by Jasmine Roth.

Part supernatural horror story, part high-stakes political thriller, Macbeth is a chilling tale of ambition, deception, and murder in the royal court of Scotland. Shakespeare’s classic tragedy comes to life in a post-apocalyptic teenage world. The young Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of Weird Sisters that he will one day be king. Consumed by his ambition and urged by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan to take the throne for himself. Then, wracked with guilt and paranoia, he continues to murder others in order to protect himself, which eventually leads to civil war, madness, and death

  • The Addams Family: Music and Lyrics by Andrew Lippa. Book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice. Directed by Israel Jimenez. Based on the comic strip by Charles Addams. July 28 at 7 p.m. (doors open at6:30).

Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren’t upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before — keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia.
