DALLAS – Three Wildcats played in finals matches in their respective draws at the SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas on Sunday, Oct. 8, and junior Camila Wesbrooks took home the championship in the No. 5 flight.
“Overall, the weekend went well,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “There are many things to work on, but we got better throughout the week and we will certainly use this experience going into the remainder of spring competition.”
Arizona’s six competitors included Wesbrooks, Marie Van Aelst, Gitte Heynemans, Devin Chypyha, Sophia Thomas and Maggie Cohen.
Wesbrooks defeated UT Arlington’s Klara Mrcela 6-1, 6-2 to win the No. 5 flight. Chypyha and Cohen also played in championship matches. Chypyha fell 6-3, 6-4 to Abilene Christian’s Sarah Adams in the No. 3 flight. Cohen lost 6-0, 6-3 to Nicole Petchey of SMU in the No. 4 flight.
Van Aelst lost 6-2, 6-0 to Kristen Rehse of GSU in the No. 1 flight third place match. Heynemans won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Abilene Christian’s Whitney Williams in the No. 2 flight seventh place match. Thomas fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Seminole State’s Valentina Gonzalez in the No. 4 flight third place match.
In doubles, Cohen/Wesbrooks won their third consecutive match 6-2 over Pieroni/Golynker of GSU. This victory clinched the No. 3 flight doubles championship.
Arizona will host its first tournament of the fall, as the Wildcat Invitational No. 1 will commence on Friday, Oct. 14 in Tucson.
